The South African Police Service (SAPS) has intercepted a shipment of cocaine concealed as hair products, packed in boxes valued at R6 million, at OR Tambo International Airport.

Rising threat of international drug smuggling operations

The discovery at the airport underscores the ongoing challenge of drug trafficking through South Africa’s borders.

International smuggling syndicates are attempting to exploit the country as a transit point.

According to The Citizen, SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Amanda Van Wyk confirmed that the operation took place on 4 March 2025, resulting in the seizure of the cocaine.

She stated that the drugs reportedly originated in São Paulo, Brazil, and were en route to France, with a stopover in South Africa.

“The cocaine was concealed in boxes disguised as hair products. Further investigations are ongoing,” she added.

On the same day, in a separate incident, police arrested a 55-year-old Nigerian national shortly after he landed from São Paulo for drug trafficking.

Van Wyk explained that authorities intercepted the man at the busy airport after they discovered he had swallowed cocaine worth an estimated R7.5 million.

“A medical x-ray revealed that the suspect had ingested multiple objects believed to be capsules containing cocaine,” she said.

“A medical examination later confirmed that he had ingested ‘bullets’ believed to contain cocaine.”

Bullets are containers that traffickers use to store cocaine.

SAPS Busts Drug Smuggling Duo

According to IOL, SAPS arrested a duo allegedly carrying cocaine with an estimated street value of R7.5 million.

Van Wyk said, “The pair, a male and a female, arrived separately on different flights from Brazil when police intercepted them.

During the inspection, officers found R2.5 million worth of cocaine with the female suspect, while the male suspect carried R5 million worth in his luggage,” she said.

Law enforcement officials have confirmed that they have not made any arrests in connection with the warehouse seizure.

Investigations are ongoing to trace those responsible for the smuggling operation. Authorities are also looking into possible links to international drug trafficking syndicates.

Further updates on the case are expected as the investigation continues.
