UMzinyathi District – The IFP has removed Reverend Petros Mthandeni Ngubane as mayor of uMzinyathi District after complaints about poor service delivery. Ngubane, who often boasted of being the late IFP founder Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi’s “adopted son,” had been mayor of uMvoti for many years before leading the uMzinyathi District, which includes Nquthu, Ndumeni and uMvoti. He was known for threatening municipal workers, claiming his sangomas could identify anyone who leaked information to the media by looking in a mirror.

KwaMakhutha – Transport Department workers have been working day and night to clear rubble blocking drains in KwaMakhutha, south of Durban. Locals say a construction company building a nearby mall and pump station illegally dumped rubble in the area. The dumping blocked storm drains, causing four houses to fill with water almost to the roof. After the workers cleared the blockage, water is now flowing properly for the first time in three weeks. Human Settlements Minister Thembi Simelane and Transport MEC Siboniso Duma stepped in to help fix the problem.

eThekwini – Durban residents are warned that Eskom has started stage 3 load shedding from 7 March until further notice. The city says people should check the eThekwini website for their load shedding schedule. Officials promise to share any new information about power cuts.
