DC Studios Co-CEO James Gunn has confirmed that filming for the highly anticipated Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow has officially wrapped.
Directed by Craig Gillespie, the film stars Milly Alcock, known for House of the Dragon, alongside Eve Ridley and Jason Momoa.
SUPERGIRL AND THE DC UNIVERSE
The screenplay, written by Ana Nogueira, draws inspiration from Tom King’s acclaimed comic series of the same name. The film is set for a theatrical release on 26 June 2026.
Gunn shared the news on the social media platform Threads in response to a fan query. “Yes, it has” when asked if filming had concluded.
The fan responded enthusiastically, “DC is looking brighter than ever!”
This marks a significant milestone for the DC Universe (DCU), signalling that Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is now moving into post-production. This is where editing, music scoring, and visual effects will be completed.
JASON MOMOA IN SUPERGIRL
Jason Momoa, who plays the iconic anti-hero Lobo, finished his scenes earlier in the schedule. He recently celebrated his wrap with heartfelt thanks to the crew.
This early completion allowed the production to focus on other elements as filming concluded according to Screen Rant.
The film’s plot follows Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, as she embarks on a cosmic journey to protect a young girl named Ruthye.
This narrative promises a fresh take on the character, diverging from traditional Superman stories. Gunn has highlighted that Supergirl’s upbringing contrasts sharply with Superman’s.
SUPERGIRL AND SUPERMAN
While Superman was raised by loving parents on Earth, Supergirl grew up isolated on a fragment of Krypton.
This adds depth and grit to her character.
As the second film in the new DCU slate, following Gunn’s Superman set for release in July 2025, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow carries high expectations.
The success of Superman will likely set the tone for the reception of Supergirl’s debut.
Gunn also revealed that Superman is over 90% complete, with final touches on music and visual effects underway.
THE EXPANDING UNIVERSE
For South African fans, this means the DC Universe is expanding with bold new stories and characters to look forward to.
James Gunn praised the creative team. “Ana Nogueira’s script was one of the first we greenlit, and it just kept getting better.
Craig Gillespie has been a dream to work with, bringing a unique vision to this big project.” Such endorsements suggest a confident and thrilling cinematic experience awaits.
THE GIRL OF STEEL
With promotional activities expected to ramp up soon, possibly around San Diego Comic-Con, fans can anticipate trailers and exclusive glimpses into the film.
The excitement is palpable, and as Gunn put it, “DC is looking brighter than ever.”
The Girl of Steel is ready to shine on the big screen, promising a fresh, cosmic adventure for superhero fans in South Africa and beyond.
