Despite her absence from the physical world, the legacy of multi-award-winning singer-songwriter Zahara continues to echo in the hearts of those who knew her.

This week officially marked one year since the sudden passing of the late Destiny hitmaker. The singer best known for captivating listeners with her acoustic guitar and soulful voice passed away on the 11th of December last year after experiencing liver complications. This has since led to her health deteriorating and ultimately her passing. At the time she had just celebrated her 36th birthday, a month prior.

Taking to Instagram, fellow musicians and friends of the singer, Zolani Mahola and Vusi Nova took time out to reflect on the impact that Zahara has had on their lives.

Sharing a video reel of the events that took place at her memorial service, Vusi Nova wrote: “We lost you on this exact day last year in the evening just after 19:00. It’s a year today yet it feels like it was only izolo. Hay’ umhlaba uyafihla maan. Continue resting in eternal peace Masthathu mase. Till we meet again.”

Meanwhile, it was the heartfelt post shared by the Freshly Ground lead singer that melted the hearts of thousands of social media users.

In her post, Zolani performed a cover version of Zahara’s Lolilwe. She explained that Zahara’s music spoke to the struggles, dreams and resilience of many South Africans.

“Today, as we honour her memory, I offer this cover of Loliwe, a song that has carried so many of us through the highs and lows of life. Zahara’s legacy is not just in the songs she left behind but in the power of her story—one that inspires us all to find our own voice and stand tall in who we are,” Zolani wrote.

“Her journey also reminds us of the importance of taking care of our health, mental well-being, and the dangers of alcohol abuse. Zahara’s passing is a painful reminder that we must look after ourselves and those around us, to break free from the cycles that harm us.”

Others in the comment section meanwhile, praised the singer for her beautiful rendition of the song.
