Youth league wants the city manager removed before July retirement over failed youth opportunities.
- Protesters gave the city 31 days to respond before taking stronger action.
The ANC Youth League is demanding the City of Ekurhuleni remove its manager Imogen Mashazi, saying she’s failing young people and allowing corruption.
Mashazi, who has been in charge since 2016, is due to retire in July. But youth league members protested outside Germiston municipal offices on Wednesday, saying she must go now.
They handed their complaints to MMC of Corporate Shared Services Sivuyile Ngodwana and MMC of Roads and Transport Planning Andile Mngwevu.
“This city needs a young and dynamic City Manager who understands the urgency of youth inclusion in governance and economic participation,” said league spokesperson Khulekani Masina.
He said the council promised 40% of opportunities for youth but hasn’t delivered. “This is unacceptable and we refuse to allow this to be business as usual.”

The youth league’s demands include:
– Advertising youth directorate positions immediately
– Getting a separate budget for youth programs
– Fixing problems with customer care managers
– Checking which companies get municipal contracts
– Building a university in Ekurhuleni
– Stopping corrupt tenders going to outside companies linked to officials
The league gave the city 31 days to respond. “If they don’t respond accordingly we will return in a radical manner which will be destructive,” warned Masina.
