Winnie Mandela production makes its way to Johannesburg

Following a successful run in Cape Town, Thembisa Mdoda-Nxumalo will return to the City of Gold for the eagerly awaited on-stage production, The Cry of Winnie Mandela.

The production is inspired by true events that took place in the heart of the struggle against the apartheid regime. It follows the lives of four women whose stories uniquely intertwine with one another as they anticipate their husbands’ release from prison.

Characterised by raw storytelling and humour, the second installment aims to shed light on the unbreakable spirit of the women whose stories it brings to life – especially that of Winnie Mandela, which will be portrayed by Thembisa Mdoda-Nxumalo.

In an interview with the entertainment publication SowetanLive, the show’s director Momo Matsunyane shed more light on what makes the role of Winnie so significant.

“Winnie Mandela continues to be a powerful, multi-layered figure to explore. Her revolutionary spirit, resilient character, and generous heart have become anchors for many women. Women of all generations and identities each see herself in her legacy. Indeed, she did not die; she multiplied,’ Momo highlighted.

Earlier this year, Thembisa highlighted just how much playing the iconic role has meant to her. In a post on X, she wrote: “This is the day that the Lord has made. If I could bottle up my excitement and sell, I would!”

Meanwhile, the show features several talented performers in the form of Rami Chuene, Pulane Rampoana, Ayanda Sibisi, Lesley Made, and Siyasanga Papu.

Those interested in experiencing captivating story-telling can do so at the show, which will now take place at The Market Theatre from 26th February to 23 March.
