Cape Town isn’t really known for snow. Winters are wet and chilly here, but snow is rare in the city itself. However, drive a couple of hours inland or head up into the mountains, and you’ll find a few reliable winter spots where snow truly does fall. Here’s a guide of the best places to see snow near Cape Town…
1. Ceres (Matroosberg Mountains)
Distance from Cape Town: +/-2 hours (170 km)
This is the most popular snow destination for Capetonians. The private Matroosberg Reserve near Ceres sits at a high enough elevation to get proper snowfall, especially between June and August. It’s accessible by car, although a 4×4 is recommended if conditions are rough.
2. Tulbagh and surrounding mountain passes
Distance: +/-1.5 to 2 hours
Tulbagh rarely gets snow in the town itself, but the surrounding mountains – especially the Witzenberg range – often get dusted in winter. It’s a great option for those wanting a scenic wine-country escape with a chance to spot snow-covered peaks.
3. Sutherland
Distance: +/-4 hours (350 km)
Located in the Karoo, Sutherland is one of South Africa’s coldest towns. It regularly sees snowfall and has a stark, beautiful winter landscape. It’s further from Cape Town, but well worth the trip if you’re chasing a snow-filled weekend.
4. Cederberg Mountains
Distance : +/-3 hours (250 km)
Snowfall here is less predictable, but when it comes, the rugged Cederberg transforms. It’s ideal for adventurers who don’t mind the cold and want to experience dramatic landscapes dusted with snow.
