WhatsApp to stop working on these phones from 5 May

iPhone users with older models face a critical deadline as WhatsApp prepares to end support for devices running iOS 15.1 or earlier on 5 May 2025. This change directly impacts models like the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus, which may lose access to the app unless updated or replaced.

WhatsApp, now owned by Meta, confirmed the move, citing the need to focus on newer software, as reported by IOL.

For users with compatible devices, updating to the latest iOS version remains the easiest fix. However, iPhones that can’t upgrade beyond iOS 12, such as the iPhone 5s, may require a full device replacement.

Why WhatsApp Is Ending Support

The decision to phase out support for older operating systems is tied to WhatsApp’s ongoing efforts to improve security, add features, and ensure better overall performance. As a result, devices unable to keep up with the app’s requirements are gradually becoming obsolete.

For many users, these upgrades bring convenience and new ways to communicate. This trend is seen across many mobile apps as developers seek to provide richer experiences while maintaining strong privacy protections.

New Features Leave Some Languages Behind

Alongside the compatibility update, WhatsApp recently introduced a significant feature: voice message transcription. The update lets users convert voice notes to text, allowing them to read messages instead of listening.

To enable it, users can go to Settings > Chats > Voice message transcripts. Importantly, the feature works on-device, meaning the content stays private and is not shared with WhatsApp or third parties.

However, not all users will benefit equally. While major languages like English are supported, Afrikaans speakers are left out for now.

Is it time to upgrade your device, or will this mark the end of WhatsApp on your phone?
