What R9.6 million man Lilepo brings to the Kaizer Chiefs party

Kamani Glody Lilepo is Kaizer Chiefs’ new R9.6 million attacker. What does the Congolese star bring to the party?

Meet Kaizer Chiefs’ new attacker and what he brings

Versatility

27-year-old Glody Lilepo is a wide attacker by trade but can also operate through the middle. Young talent Wandile Duba has been deployed as a right winger in recent weeks but he’d prefer to play down the middle. Could Lilepo’s arrival accommodate this?

Experience

Makabi Glody Lilepo has played his club football in all sorts of interesting locations. Born in Kinshasa, Lilepo started with AS Vita Club in his home country. The next stop was Mbabane Swallows in Eswatini after which he returned to AS Vita Club and bounced between spells with them and FC Renaissance in DR Congo. Next up was Al-Hilal in Sudan. His first move outside of Africa came in September 2023 when he swapped North Africa for Northern France, a move valued at €478k (R9.2 million). Duba and fellow youngster Mduduzi Shabalala might have less goal-scoring burden with Lilepo at the club but that’ll depend on how quickly he settles. Chiefs fans will hope it’s a quick and smooth transition.

Lilepo has also, unfortunately, experienced the pain of relegation from France’s Ligue 1. Although that’s not necessarily a positive experience, it can teach a player a lot about himself, his teammates and the importance of fighting in football.

Something a little different

Lilepo’s experience in Africa and France will have equipped him with some interesting tools. Can he use those to help his younger teammates elevate their own games?

Nedbank Cup is next for Kaizer Chiefs

Chiefs will fancy their chances of making the next round of the Nedbank Cup after drawing Gauteng ABC Motsepe League outfit Free Agents. However, you can never say never in football, as some of their fans have reminded us:

“My team Chiefs is already out, y’all know we struggled over the years ngalama-small teams.”

“Starting Jan 26 I want to see new players donning KCFC jerseys on the field at FNB. Tired of being a laughing stock.”
