What is cherry eye in dogs?
Cherry eye is a common condition in dogs where the third eyelid, a thin membrane located in the corner of the eye, protrudes from its normal position. This protrusion often appears as a red, cherry-sized lump. While it might look alarming, cherry eye is usually not painful for the dog. It occurs when the connective tissue supporting the third eyelid becomes weak or damaged, causing it to prolapse. While it’s generally a benign condition, untreated cherry eye can lead to irritation, dryness, and even corneal ulcers. If you notice your dog has cherry eye, it’s important to consult with a veterinarian for proper diagnosis and treatment.
