A devastating day for South Africa’s entertainment industry as it has been reported that veteran actor Don Mlangeni Nawa, who was greatly known for his role as Zeb Matabane on mzansi classic Isidingo, has died at the age of 65.

Mzansi has suffered one more blow as yet another icon has taken their final bow and transitioned into a different life. One cannot speak enough about the impact that Don had on South Africa’s television industry, as a few of his roles embody a nostalgic feeling for many citizens across the country. Even those who do not necessarily know his name can attest to his influence and popularity in the country.

Don’s illustrious career was a tale of longevity, as it spanned over a total of three decades and comprised various legendary and unforgettable roles that scored him some major awards and recognition. He became a prominent figure in the acting industry, mostly for his commanding presence and versatile performances, which left an indelible legacy in the industry.

Although his acting journey and career began in theatre, where he thrived in local productions, his transition to screen acting catapulted him to the legend that he has become today. He took off in the early 1990s when he debuted as David in the popular Zulu film Ubambo Lwami. To this day, his role as ‘Bra Zeb’ or Zebedee on Isidingo remains one of the most unforgettable characters in mzansi soap opera history, as many have referred to Don as such up until today. His other roles, such as Moseki on The Throne, Thato Mokeona on The River, Shadrack Mokobane in The Estate, Dlomo on Uzalo, and Langa on Shaka Ilembe, further cemented his status as one of the all-time greats.

Taking to Instagram, Don’s family revealed that he had passed away on 16 April 2025. Although they do not specify his cause of death, the family expressed gratitude for the continuous love and support from everyone and has asked for privacy during this time.

“He was the heart of our family_ a loving father, brother and friend. To the world, he was a loved and respected actor whose presence lit up every screen and stage he graced. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the stories he told, and the love he gave so freely,” the statement reads.

As expected, the announcement has been met with an overwhelming response as social media users express their sincere condolences to the family and voice how this death affected them, despite not knowing the actor personally.
