The Oyster Box Hotel has announced the death of its 19-year-old feline resident, Skabenga.
The cat’s presence and playful charm have been a beloved fixture in the hotel for many years.
Known affectionately as “King of The Oyster Box,” Skabenga’s death marks the end of an era for the hotel. The furry friend ruled the halls with confidence and was well-known by local and international guests.
SKABENGA, THE LOVEABLE HOOLIGAN
True to his name, Skabenga, which means “vagabond” or “hooligan” in Zulu, lived life on his own terms.
For years, he was a familiar sight in the hotel’s luxurious lobby, strutting through the reception area or curled up on a chair nearby.
He always claimed the best spots in the hotel, soaking up the sun and enjoying his daily naps in full view of guests.
The well-known feline even had his own Instagram account, which was filled with photos of him posing, dressed in Christmas gear, or being patted by a guest.
SKABENGA, THE ULTIMATE CHARMER
Skabenga’s reign extended beyond just his physical presence.
He had a knack for charming guests from all corners of the world, offering a quiet paw for a friendly pat or a gentle purr as visitors snapped photos of him lounging around the hotel.
It wasn’t unusual for Skabenga to sneak a treat from an unsuspecting guest. He would often saunter in on a busy conference, much to the attendees’ delight.
The hotel posted a farewell message to Skabenga on its Facebook page.
Hundreds of messages of condolence poured in on social media, with many guests expressing their sorrow.
“What a legend with such a wonderful personality, he will be hugely missed.” said one comment.
“Rest softly, beautiful boy, I am so glad I got to share my 40th Birthday with you at The Oyster Box,” replied another.
One guest called on the hotel to “make a statue of him in the entrance to honour his memory”.
Skabenga may have gone, but he leaves behind a legacy as the hotel’s most famous resident, reminding everyone of the charm and character he brought to Umhlanga for nearly two decades.
