Police in Limpopo have arrested two Zimbabwean nationals after catching them with 148.5 kilograms of dagga, worth approximately R500,000.

The suspects, aged 25 and 39, were apprehended in Thabazimbi, a mining town near the Botswana border, roughly 450 kilometers from the Beitbridge Border Post.

Joint Operation Leads to Major Dagga Seizure

According to SAPS Limpopo spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, the arrests followed a joint operation between law enforcement and local farmers.

“Officers stopped a truck carrying a male driver and a female passenger. Upon searching the vehicle, they discovered 106 small bags, 10 large bags, and two refuse bags filled with dagga,” Ledwaba stated.

Police also seized a white Scania truck with two trailers, allegedly used to transport the contraband.

Dagga suspects to appear in court

Authorities took the pair into custody on Thursday and will present them before a magistrate’s court soon on drug possession and trafficking charges.

Authorities in Limpopo have reaffirmed their commitment to tackling drug smuggling, which remains a growing concern in the province.

In another development, a dramatic escape took place on Wednesday as suspects abandoned their contraband and fled on foot to evade arrest. The suspects abandoned the illicit cigarettes, valued at R3 million, as authorities closed in. Law enforcement officials are now investigating the incident. They are working to track down the suspects and determine the full extent of the smuggling operation.
