Tshwane announces a 48-hour water interruption for next week

The City of Tshwane has announced that residents within the Eersterust Reservoir supply area will experience a 48-hour water interruption from Monday, 6 May to Tuesday, 7 May. Technicians will be carrying out essential upgrades to the reservoir infrastructure during this time.

Work will start promptly at 7:00 on 6 May and is expected to continue for two days.

The city assured residents that “all supplying reservoirs will be filled to capacity prior to the shutdown. ” However, it warned that supply interruptions may still occur in areas such as Derdepoort, Despatch, Eersterust and its extensions, Hartbeespoort, Jan Niemandpark, Mamelodi Ext 13, Silvertondale, and Waltloo.

Water storage and preparation for the water interruption

The city is urging residents to store enough water for household use before the water interruption begins. “Residents are urged to store enough water for household purposes during this time,” the city said in a statement.

In addition to personal storage, reservoirs will be topped up to mitigate the impact where possible.

Households across the affected suburbs are advised to prepare in advance by filling up storage containers and using water sparingly during the outage period.

City Encourages Water Conservation

Alongside this announcement, the city has emphasised the need for ongoing water conservation efforts. Residents are encouraged to adopt water-saving habits beyond the immediate shutdown.

“Do not water or irrigate gardens with hosepipes or sprinkler systems between 6:00 and 18:00,” the city advised, adding that washing vehicles with hosepipes and filling swimming pools should also be avoided.

Furthermore, residents are encouraged to use grey water for activities like watering gardens and flushing toilets. The City also appealed to the community to report any water leaks or incidents of wastage and to install water-saving devices where possible.

Apology and community cooperation

Acknowledging the disruption this may cause, the City expressed regret for the inconvenience.

“The City of Tshwane sincerely apologises for the inconvenience that may be encountered during this planned water interruption,” the statement concluded.
