A routine bread delivery took a criminal turn in Tweefontein when a bakery driver was hijacked and locked in the back of his truck during a truck jacking early Saturday morning, 24 May. Police arrested one suspect after the community helped recover the vehicle and corner the perpetrator.

Truck jacking during delivery

According to police, the truck jacking incident unfolded around 5:40 when the driver stopped at a general dealer to deliver bread. As he stepped out of the vehicle, two men who had been hiding behind the truck confronted him. They ordered the driver into the back of the truck and locked him in with the bread stock.

“The suspects drove around and stopped at a few shops selling and delivering bread,” police confirmed in their statement.

The unsuspecting driver remained trapped as the criminals attempted to turn the hijacking into a delivery scheme.

The truck eventually stopped on the main road in Gemsbokspruit, near a crèche. One suspect opened the back and ordered the driver out, taking his cell phone, driver’s license, and R470 in cash. The suspects abandoned the truck and attempted to flee the scene by boarding a taxi.

Thanks to action from community members, one of the suspects was apprehended shortly afterwards, and the stolen truck was recovered. The arrested man is expected to appear at the KwaMhlanga Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 26 May.

Police Praise Public for Support

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, commended the residents of Tweefontein for aiding law enforcement.
