Tragic fire claims lives of two children in Bishop Lavis

A tragic fire claimed the lives of two young children in the early hours of Tuesday morning, 13 May 2025.

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), emergency personnel were called to the scene at approximately 02:30 on Tuesday, 13 May 2025.

When police arrived at the scene, they found a Wendy house in a backyard on Limpopo Street in Bishop Lavis, Cape Town, completely destroyed by fire.

BISHOP LAVIS FIRE CLAIMS LIVES OF TWO CHILDREN

The bodies of two children, aged 10 and 4, were discovered among the wreckage. Preliminary reports indicate that the family of four had been asleep when the blaze broke out.

The children were later identified as 4-year-old Lamar Saaiman and 10-year-old Shanique Geduld.

The parents sustained serious burn injuries while trying to rescue their children. They were taken to the hospital for urgent medical treatment.

Police confirmed that the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

LOUD EXPLOSION

A family member told IOL that she was woken by a loud explosion. Believing it was a bomb, she bolted outside in a panic.

“They were asleep with the lamp on. We think the gas tank exploded after it fell and started the blaze,” she said

The family also lost their four puppies in the fire.

WOMAN ARRESTED FOR ARSON

The South Africanpreviously reported that police arrested 27-year-old Monique Kekana for arson on Friday, 2 May, at the scene of a fire in Middelpos, Saldanha Bay.

She told Newzroom Afrika that she felt relieved to be released because she was scared, especially after hearing frightening stories about life in Pollsmoor Prison.

In court, Kekana said she set the property on fire to seek justice for missing girl Joshlin Smith. Although she admitted guilt to the police, she plans to plead not guilty. She explained her actions by saying, “I’m also a mother.”
