Canadian singer and rapper Tory Lanez is recovering after being stabbed 14 times in prison.

Lanez, who is serving a 10-year sentence for shooting fellow rapper Megan Thee Stallion, was reportedly rushed to hospital on Monday, 12 May, following the incident.

His team released a statement that he is recovering and in good spirits.

“Despite being in pain, he is talking normally, in good spirits and deeply thankful to God that he is pulling through,” his team said.

According to the statement, the singer sustained seven stab wounds to his back, four to his torso, two to the back of his head and one to the left side of his face.

“Both of his lungs collapsed and he was placed on a breathing apparatus. He is now breathing on his own,” the statement added.

Suspect identified as inmate serving life for murder

According to People magazine, the suspect has been identified as Santino Casio, an inmate serving a life sentence for second-degree murder and first-degree attempted murder, among other charges.

Casio has been in custody in Los Angeles county since February 2004.

He reportedly has a lengthy history of in-prison offences, including a 2008 conviction in Imperial county for assault with a deadly weapon while incarcerated and a 2018 conviction for possession or manufacture of a deadly weapon in prison.

Lanez’s conviction and sentencing

In 2020, Lanez was charged with assault with a semiautomatic firearm, personal use of a firearm and carrying a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle, to which he pleaded not guilty.

Following a nine-day trial in December 2022, he was found guilty on all counts and sentenced to 10 years in prison in August 2023.

The charges stemmed from a July 2020 incident when Lanez shot Megan Thee Stallion during an altercation in Los Angeles.
