As the leaves turn golden and the temperatures drop, your skin might start feeling drier, tighter, and a little less radiant. Autumn’s crisp air, combined with indoor heating, can strip moisture from the skin, making hydration more important than ever. Skincare experts agree that adjusting your routine to the season is key to maintaining a healthy glow.
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, one of the most effective ways to keep skin hydrated is by switching to a thicker, cream-based moisturiser.
“Lotions are great for summer, but autumn requires something more occlusive to lock in moisture,” says Dr Andrea Collins, a Cape Town-based dermatologist. She also suggests applying moisturiser while your skin is still damp after showering to help with absorption.
Another must-have? A hydrating cleanser. The above publication claims that harsh, foaming cleansers can strip your skin of natural oils, worsening dryness. Instead, it is advised you opt for a gentle, creamy cleanser with ingredients like glycerin or hyaluronic acid, which attract and retain moisture.
The British Journal of Dermatology highlights hyaluronic acid’s ability to hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water—making it a powerhouse ingredient for autumn skincare. Experts from the mentioned journal also warn against forgetting sunscreen just because summer is over. “UV rays are present all year round, and they contribute to premature ageing and dehydration,” explains the journal.
Lastly, the above source states that hydration starts from within, as drinking enough water and eating moisture-rich foods, such as cucumbers and oranges, can support skin health.
With a few seasonal tweaks, your skin can remain soft, hydrated, and happy—no matter how chilly it gets outside.
