If there’s one cupboard in our homes that is likely overflowing with a ton of products, it’s our vanities. Overconsumption of beauty products is a byproduct of the everchanging beauty trends, like the 12-step Korean beauty regimes – but who has the time (and ongoing budget) to keep up with it all? So, let’s take the time to spring-clean your beauty cupboard.

With a few well-chosen, multi-purpose products, you can achieve effective results and streamline your routine.

When to let go of old products

Deciding when to replace a beauty product can be tricky. Ideally, we would finish each product before it expires, but for those of us with a packed beauty cupboard, that’s not always possible.

Expired items not only lose their effectiveness but may even irritate your skin, especially sensitive areas like the eyes.

As you spring-clean your beauty cupboard, consider the following steps to help determine what’s worth keeping:

  1. Check the expiration date: If an expiration date is visible, use this as a clear guideline for when to replace an item.
  2. Check consistency and scent: Thickening, clumping, separation, or any change in scent are signs the product may no longer be safe.
  3. Look for the “period after opening” (pao) symbol: Many products feature a small icon of an open jar with a number, such as “12M.” This indicates the product is safe to use for 12 months after opening.
  4. Consider how long you’ve had it: If you can’t remember when or where you bought something, it’s probably time to replace it.

Smart Shopping: Multi-Purpose Essentials

With a fresh, decluttered beauty space, you may feel tempted to refill it. However, you can achieve the same results with fewer products by investing in versatile, high-quality items. Here are a few multi-purpose beauty essentials to consider:

Tissue oil

Tissue oil is celebrated for its versatility. This highly moisturizing product can minimize scars, and stretch marks, and works as an all-over body moisturizer, bath oil, or hair mask.

Cleansing wipes

A pack of cleansing wipes is perfect for quick touch-ups, removing makeup, or freshening up after exercise.

Body butter

Body butter isn’t just a winter staple—it’s a year-round skin saviour. Use it to treat dry heels, hands, elbows, and knees. It’s also perfect post-shave or pre-tan for an even application.
