The remarkable rise of Mohau Nkota

Orlando Pirates have two tricks up their sleeves.

The one, Relebohile Mofokeng, has already established himself as a future superstar. Now Mohau Nkota is stepping into the spotlight.

And where better to do it than the CAF Champions League, scoring an emphatic brace in Orlando Pirates first game back in 2000 days.

Following his routine opener against CR Belouizdad, Nkota dropped the mic after rifling a thirty-yard strike into the top right corner, putting the Buccaneers 2-0 up and on course to their subsequent 2-1 victory.

Where has he been hiding?

Hitting the back-netting is nothing new to Orlando Pirates’ latest sensation, who scored two goals in six minutes against AmaZulu FC over a month ago.

In his first top-flight season, the twenty-year-old winger has four goals in seven games, suggesting that this is just the beginning for the Kimberly native.

Nkota’s career was almost cut short following a horrific neck injury against Kaizer Chiefs in the Diski Challenge; doctors were initially unsure whether he would play again.

‘The injury came at the worst time possible’, he reflected.

“Here I am about to become a professional player, and this happens. During my 4 to 5 hours wait at the hospital, I had many thoughts coming into my head, but fortunately, through God’s grace, I overcame my situation.”

Following his man-of-the-match performance for Orlando Pirates against CR Belouizdad, he said, “It’s hard to put into words what this means to me. To score twice in such an important match is a dream come true. I’m just so grateful for everyone who believed in me and for this incredible club.”

PSL legend sings Nkota’s praise

Mamelodi Sundowns long-range specialist Hlompho Kekana was taken back by the youngster’s Champions League performance, saying,“When I look at it [Nkota’s goal], I get goosebumps”.

Following which, he added, “What I like about it is the boy’s technique. These are the kind of goals I like the most because it takes audacity to do that in a crowd that he is not familiar with,

“That tells you that the boys are well-prepared and that the coaches have done their work on the players in this team.”
