After captivating South African TikTok with her story of perseverance in her marriage, it appears Thandeka Ndebele has competition as ‘imbokodo’ of the year as Celiwe submits her own tale that has had Mzansi talking non-stop.

The term imbokodo directly translates to ‘rock‘, however, in the South African context, it is often associated with a woman’s strength, resilience and overall collective power. TikTok user Thandeka Ndebele submitted her application for imbokodo of the year when she took to the platform to share an extensive recollection of the trials and tribulations that her now ex-husband put her through during their marriage.

Not only did she reveal that infidelity was a constant issue, but she also revealed that she was tricked into making certain financial decisions that have affected her to this day.

Now enter Dr Celiwe Dada, another now-healed woman who had much to say about the harsh realities of her marriage to her husband whom she is currently separated from. According to users, Celiwe’s story is giving Thandeka a run for her money, as the doctor revealed that their relationship has gotten to the extent of physical violence, and has resulted in her family and friends disowning her.

However, the most shocking part of Celiwe’s story is when she revealed that she had bought an expensive luxury car for her husband to use on more than one occasion, with the second car costing her a whopping R23k in monthly instalments. According to Celiwe, this vehicle has now been repossessed as her finances have been negatively affected by this situation.

These two women’s stories have given rise to an even bigger conversation regarding the challenges that independent career women face on a daily basis in romantic relationships, as they have taken on the ‘breadwinner’ role despite patriarchy deeming men as the providers. Furthermore, internet users have expressed the importance of remaining empathetic to their situation as it is a reality for many more women than society cares to admit.
