Thalente Mbatha breaks silence on shocking drunken rumours ahead of Golden Arrows clash.
Social media erupted on Monday night with claims that the Bafana Bafana international showed up at Rand Stadium under the influence of alcohol, preventing him from participating in daily training sessions. However, Mbatha wasted no time in addressing these rumours head-on.
Injury or internal issues? Mbatha’s absence raises questions
Mbatha has been absent from Pirates’ last two matches against Mamelodi Sundowns and Baroka FC. The club initially cited an injury sustained during a Betway Premiership clash against Sekhukhune United as the reason for his absence.
However, just before the Baroka FC match, Pirates confirmed that Mbatha had fully recovered and was available for selection. Despite this, he was not included in the matchday squad, leading to speculation about his status within the team.
Rising star at Pirates
Since signing a permanent deal with Pirates from SuperSport United in July 2024, Mbatha has become a key player for The Buccaneers. Initially joining on loan during the second half of last season, he secured a full-time move after impressing with his performances.
So far this season, Mbatha has made 24 appearances across all competitions, scoring four goals and providing one assist. His standout performances have also cemented his place in the Bafana Bafana squad over the past few months.
Mbatha fires back at allegations
Dismissing the rumors, the 24-year-old took to Instagram Live to set the record straight.
“They said I’m not training, you listen to everything, and I just came back from training. People can say whatever about me, but I’m coming from training. You guys will see me tomorrow [against Golden Arrows],” Mbatha declared confidently, playing music in his car on Tuesday.
“I guess the person who said this knows better; maybe he’s the one who hired me, or he owns the club. You see when you’re doing well, people will always want to do things to bring you down.
“What I say, guys, is that I’m from training, and in the past matches, I was injured; even the team did say that I was injured. I’m fit for tomorrow; if they put me in the team, then I’m playing.”
Orlando Pirates are set to face Golden Arrows in a crucial Betway Premiership clash at Mpumalanga Stadium. As the team aims to close the gap on log-leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, all eyes will be on whether Mbatha makes the squad. The match kicks off at 19:30.
With Mbatha’s strong denial and his commitment to the team, fans eagerly await his return to the pitch.
