Mamelodi Sundowns have reported reached an agreement to terminate the contract of one of their most expensive signings ever.

The Brazilians are set to trim their squad ahead of next season, under the request of head coach Miguel Cardoso who prefers to work with a smaller group.

And now, reports suggest a player who costed the club a fortune and made just 16 appearances for Mamelodi Sundowns will leave next month!

Argentinian midfielder Matias Esquivel joined Mamelodi Sundowns in a reported multi-million-rand deal back in January 2024.

The midfielder however struggled to settle down in Africa. He was subsequently loaned to his former side CA Talleres in August 2024.

After his six month loan spell, Esquivel returned back to Mamelodi Sundowns in January. Since his return, the attacking midfielder has made just three appearances for the club.

And now, reports suggest the club have reached an agreement to terminate his contract.

“For now, the decision is as good as done. Esquivel won’t be staying on at the club for next season. He is one of the players that the team is believed to be releasing next season and apparently he would be returning back to his club in Argentina,” an insider told Soccer Laduma.

Esquivel’s joined Mamelodi Sundowns on a four-year contract in 2023. The club are planning to completely cut ties with the Argentinian next month.
