South Africa is a proud country with THREE teams in the semifinals of this season’s CAF-interclub competitions.
This was confirmed after Wednesday’s matches where both Orlando Pirates and Stellenbosch FC were in action.
SOUTH AFRICA REPRESENTED BY THREE CLUBS IN CAF
On Tuesday, Mamelodi Sundowns sealed their spot in the CAF Champions League semifinals by beating Esperance 1-0 on aggregate.
This was followed by Pirates’ 1-0 aggregate win over MC Alger in the other quarterfinal clash played at Orlando Stadium on Wednesday.
On the other side, Stellies advanced to their first ever CAF Confederation Cup semifinals.
Steve Barker’s charges stunned African giants Zamalek in their own backyard, beating them 1-0 on Wednesday night.
This means the PSL will be represented by THREE clubs in the semifinals of CAF-interclub competitions; something that has NEVER happened before.
Now, Sundowns will face Al Ahly over two legs while Pirates will play against Pyramids in the other semifinals.
Interestingly, two South African clubs will face off against two Egyptian teams in the semifinals of the CAF Champions League.
Meanwhile, Stellies will play against Tanzanian giants Simba SC in the CAF Confederation Cup semifinals.
Ironically, Simba are coached by South African-born coach Fadlu Davids, meaning the country is well represented in the semifinals of CAF-interclub competitions.
In addition, all the three South African teams advanced to the semifinals of the two CAF-interclub competitions WITHOUT conceding.
Meanwhile, Moroccan giants RS Berkane will face Algeria’s CS Constantine in the other semifinals of the CAF Confederation Cup in the other semifinal.
