SONA 2025 red carpet set to dazzle with local talent

This year’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) isn’t just about politics—it’s also about fashion, and South African designers are taking centre stage.

While President Cyril Ramaphosa will outline his plans for the year ahead, eyes will also be on the red carpet, where local fashion will shine.

SONA has become a major style moment, with dignitaries and guests stepping out in their finest outfits. And this year, according to sanews.gov.za, there’s a big push to make those outfits proudly South African.

Proudly South African, the country’s “buy local” movement, is teaming up with SONA to celebrate homegrown talent in the fashion industry.

This is all about showing off the incredible creativity of local designers while supporting the economy.

The Local Fashion Police Are Patrolling

One of the most exciting parts of SONA 2025 is the Local Fashion Police activation.

Think of it as a fun red carpet-moment with a purpose.

A panel of fashion professionals including big names like Sello Medupe (Scalo), Palesa Mokubung (Mantsho), and Otsile Sefolo (Otiz Seflo) will be on hand to celebrate those who rock locally made outfits.

They will also gently remind anyone who didn’t think that supporting South African designers was on trend this year.

Fashion writer Leonie Wagner and red-carpet MC Thami Dish will join the crew to keep things lively and stylish.

The goal?

To get everyone talking about why buying local matters—not just for looking good but for boosting jobs and growing the economy.

Why Local Fashion Matters

It’s not just about slaying on the red carpet—there’s a bigger picture here.

The South African fashion industry plays a huge role in creating jobs and supporting families across the country. By choosing local designs, SONA guests are making a statement: supporting homegrown talent is key to building a stronger economy.

Eustace Mashimbye, CEO of Proudly South African, said, “As the country works towards revitalising the economy, it is essential to showcase the innovation and creativity within our borders. Supporting local businesses, particularly in sectors like fashion, can drive job creation and foster sustainable growth.”

A Red Carpet With Purpose

The SONA red carpet isn’t just about glitz and glam this year—it’s also about creating awareness.

The event will be broadcast on Parliament TV and Proudly SA’s social media channels, so everyone can join in on the conversation.

So, while SONA 2025 will tackle big issues like poverty and unemployment, it’s also showing how small choices—like buying local—can have a big impact.

From bold prints to elegant gowns, this year’s red carpet is all about celebrating South African talent.

The annual State of the Nation Address will be on 6 February 2025 at 19:00 in Cape Town.
