Over the past few days, there have been a host of weather warnings and inclement conditions that have swept across the country, with the Eastern Cape expected to receive plenty of rainfall on Monday, while videos of widespread snow on certain high ground have recently been shared online.
As a strong cut-of low has made landfall, snow has fallen across high-lying roads and mountain passes, such as at Wapadsberg pass – with motorists warned to take great care on the roads in these areas.
Persistent rainfall is expected to continue in the Eastern Cape on Tuesday before the weather then begins to clear up.
Unathi Binqose, the transport department’s spokesperson, said teams are monitoring conditions and passes in the area closely.
“Motorists should only use the pass if they absolutely have to,” he said. “And if they do, they must drive very carefully.”
