At the start of this year, outspoken and well-known South African artist The Kiffness caused something of an online furore with his opinions on white South Africans, Apartheid and ‘race-based laws’, which drew reactions from the likes of Siv Ngesi, muso Holly Rey and comedian Bouwer Bosch.
In that instance, The Kiffness referenced what he termed South Africa’s “nonsensical race laws” – such as the Employment Equity Act – while also mentioning the 1992 Apartheid referendum – limited to white South Africans, where 68.73% of the voters agreed to reform.
During that social media storm, well-known presenter and influencer Siv Ngesi responded to say “some white South Africans will one day try to convince us that apartheid never happened!”, and the online battle between the two personalities has not died down.
In the ongoing spat, Ngesi confirmed this week that he has received a lawyer’s letter from The Kiffness, but he quite literally laughed it off in posts shared on X.
On his X account, The Kiffness asked: “Why is @iamSivN (Ngesi) trying to cancel me for pointing out that 69% of white South Africans voted against Apartheid in the 1992 referendum?”
In response, Ngesi wrote on X: “That’s nothing compared to what you have said! We all know you’re posting this for backup from your racists! Keep going!”
Although there were indications that the two attempted to resolve their differences over the phone, it clearly has not been settled, with Ngesi stating on Wednesday: “Don’t bother calling me again @TheKiffness, we talk here now! Where you have the biggest balls to say utter bullsh*t!! There on a phone call you sound less confident!”
It remains to be seen where this saga will end up, with no details shared around the exact nature of the lawyer’s letter as yet.
