Mpumalanga is one of the most dangerous provinces in South Africa, with a murder rate of 6 per 100,000 people in 2024.

Tips for Staying Safe When Assisting Stranded Motorists

While helping others is a noble act, it’s important to stay safe in potentially dangerous situations. Here are a few tips to consider when encountering stranded vehicles, especially at night:

  1. Call for Help First: Before stopping to assist, always contact the authorities to report the stranded vehicle. They can dispatch professionals to handle the situation, ensuring your safety.
  2. Assess the Situation from a Distance: If you decide to stop, make sure to keep a safe distance at first to observe the situation. Look for any signs of danger, such as multiple people in the vehicle or suspicious behavior.
  3. Lock Your Doors: Always keep your vehicle doors locked while driving, especially when approaching a stopped vehicle. This prevents any immediate threats from entering your car.
  4. Stay in Your Vehicle: If you’re unsure about the situation, stay inside your car and offer help from a safe distance. You can offer to call a tow truck or assist in notifying the proper authorities without putting yourself at risk.
  5. Trust Your Instincts: If something feels off, trust your instincts and drive away. Your safety should always come first, and it’s better to be cautious than to put yourself in harm’s way.
  6. Travel in Pairs: If possible, avoid stopping alone. Having a passenger can act as a deterrent to potential criminals and help you remain safer in unpredictable situations.

These simple precautions can make a big difference in ensuring your safety while still lending a hand to those in need. It’s important to stay aware of your surroundings and always prioritize your personal safety.
