The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Yellow Level 4 warning for strong and potentially damaging winds, expected to affect the south-western and western interior regions of the country from Friday, 9 Maythrough to Saturday, 10 May.
According to the alert, wind gusts may reach speeds of up to 88km/h, posing risks to infrastructure, trees, vehicles, and public safety.
These intense gusts, though short-lived, can cause significant damage, especially in areas with vulnerable structures or loose debris.
The warning is valid from 12:00 to midnight on both days.
Safety guidelines:
- Prune or remove dead branches, particularly near windows and power lines
- Secure or store loose outdoor items such as furniture, bins, and trampolines
- Keep children and pets indoors; ensure outdoor animals are safely sheltered
- Park vehicles in garages or away from trees and unsecured structures
- Drive cautiously during windy conditions and avoid areas with fallen power lines
SAWS encouraged residents in affected areas to remain alert and prepared, and to report any emergencies to local authorities.
