SASSA old-age grants for March 2025 are here, with latest updates and more.
The South African Social Security Agency is facing one of its most chaotic periods in history. Beneficiaries of SASSA Old-Age Grants for March 2025 are left in the dark following a series of financial and administrative crises. From delayed budget announcements to the ongoing Postbank card swap disaster, millions of vulnerable citizens are uncertain about their future payments.
Here’s everything you need to know about the final SASSA Old-Age Grants for March 2025, payment dates, eligibility, and looming concerns for April and beyond.
March 2025 SASSA Old-Age Grant Payments
Despite the turmoil, SASSA will distribute Old-Age Grants on Tuesday, 4 March 2025. The payment amounts remain unchanged for this month:
- Pensioners aged 60 to 74: R2,190
- Pensioners aged 75 and older: R2,210
These will be the last payments at the current rates. However, SASSA has yet to confirm whether increases will take effect from April 2025.
Delayed budget speech and the card swap disaster
Millions of South Africans anxiously awaited Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana’s February budget speech for confirmation of grant increases. However, the postponed speech left recipients without answers, fueling further uncertainty.
Adding to the crisis, Social Development Minister Tolashe called the Postbank card swap a ‘crisis.’ Over three million gold cardholders were given less than a month to switch their cards, leading to long queues, extreme weather conditions, and a lack of basic facilities for elderly and disabled beneficiaries. The extended deadline of Thursday, 20 March 2025, is unlikely to ease the situation.
Legal Battles and Future Grant Uncertainty
A High Court ruling earlier this year found that millions had been ‘unlawfully’ excluded from Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grants. If the government upholds this ruling, it could impact existing ‘core’ grants, including those for the elderly, disabled, war veterans, and parents.
Meanwhile, the Government of National Unity (GNU) blocked the Finance Minister’s proposed VAT increase from 15% to 17%, a move economists believe was aimed at funding a Basic Income Grant (BIG). This expansion of the SRD grant would require an estimated R36 billion, raising concerns about potential funding shortages for pensioners.
