Celebrated businesswoman Shauwn Mkhize, affectionately known as MaMkhize, is making headlines after the South African Revenue Services (SARS), assisted by the police, raided her rumoured R20 million La Lucia on Tuesday afternoon.
SARS RAID MAMKHIZE’S R20 MILLION MANSION
However, a rumour mill has since established that several of MaMkhize’s properties dotted around the country were raided.
African Timesreported that the Hollywood-style raids were undertaken at MaMkhize’s properties in Durban, Pietermaritzburg – where she owns farms and Sandton in Johannesburg.
However, Sars have since confirmed news of the raid but did not reveal if they had contacted similar raids at her other properties as alleged.
MaMkhize reportedly owes Sars around R37 million in unpaid taxes. The South Africanhas since established that the raid was done to preserve and secure assets from the businesswoman.
The taxman revealed that the raid was part of its “effort to combat tax evasion and criminal activity that undermines the country’s economy.”
MAKING HEADLINES
A few months ago, Sars said they were progressing in the matter against MaMkhize.
Earlier this year, the publication reported that Sars failed to close down on the multi-millionaire after “there was a standoff between the two security companies when the Sars tried to seize some of her assets.”
However, reports suggested that curators visited MaMkhize’s properties in Sandton and Durban but could not gain access to them.
However, at the time ZiMojareported that the raids came after Sars applied for an execution order at the Pietermaritzburg High Court against Royal AM owner MaMkhize.
HOW DID THE DEBT BALLOON FROM R12 MILLION TO R37 MILLION IN A DAY?
Last year, MaMkhize had a debt of R12.7 million, but it ballooned to R37 million in a day.
Reports have it that the debt ballooned after MaMkhize’s Royal AM was ordered to pay Samir Nurkovic’s two-year contractin full.
Against the judgement, the High Court of South Africa ordered MaMkhize to cough up her debts to Sars.
However, the High Court also directed the court sheriff “to attach and remove the movable property of the Royal AM.”
