SANParks partially reopens hiking trails after fire

South African National Parks (SANParks) has officially reopened a number of hiking trails in Table Mountain National Park following the recent fire.

According to Tourism Update, adverse weather conditions caused a delay in aerial assessments of the fire damage, but SANParks has since begun ground assessments with particular attention to structural hazards on trails.

It has already been found that the fire scorched more than 3 000 hectares of vegetation.

Since then, a suspect has been arrested in connection with the wildfire, following a tip-off that led law enforcement to a man seen in Clovelly.

The suspect was then apprehended and now faces arson charges.

Which hiking trails have reopened?

According to SANParks, the Table Mountain hiking trails now open to the public include:

  • Trappies Kop,
  • Elsies Peak,
  • Lower Tokai,
  • Peers Cave,
  • Chapman’s Peak, and
  • East Fort.

The Silvermine and Upper Tokai areas remain closed pending further assessment, and no reopening date has been announced for these hiking trails.
