Theft charges against South African Football Association (SAFA) president Danny Jordaan and chief financial officer (CFO) Gronie Hluyo were withdrawn by the state on Friday.

However, Jordaan still faces fraud-related charges.

Jordaan and Hluyo were arrested last year over allegations of misusing SAFA funds for personal benefit, including hiring a PR firm to manage his image after a 2017 rape scandal.

Jordaan, Hluyo, and a third co-accused, Trevor Neethling, all made brief appearances before the Palm Ridge Magistrates Court in Johannesburg, on Friday morning.

This after the trio were arrested in November last year, as reported by The South African website.

The State alleges Jordaan misused over R1 million of SAFA funds for PR services following the rape allegations.

According to EWN, Jordaan and Hluyo initially faced seven charges, but charges five, six, and seven, related to theft of over R880 000, have now been dropped.

‘The law makes provision for the State to alter the charge sheet so long as an accused person has not yet pleaded as and when information becomes available or as and when the investigation uncovers certain information that brings changes to the evidence that we have,’ the report quoted National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson, Phindi Mjonondwane as saying.

Despite calls for his resignation, including from Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie, Jordaan continues in his role.

He is set to return to court in August this year.

How is Danny Jordaan not behind bars already?
