Sabrina Carpenter has teamed up with country music icon Dolly Parton for a reimagined version of her hit single Please Please Please. The song seems to target her ex, Barry Keoghan.
SABRINA CARPENTER’S NEW COLLABORATION
Released on Valentine’s Day, the collaboration infuses a country twang into the pop track and features a music video with a not-so-subtle reference to Keoghan.
For those in Mzansi who’ve been following the Carpenter-Keoghan saga, this new video adds another layer to their public breakup.
Sabrina Carpenter and Keoghan were first linked in December 2023 but called it quits around a year later, according to People.
Sources cited their demanding careers as the reason for the split.
SABRINA CARPENTER AND BARRY
The original Please Please Please music video featured Keoghan as Carpenter’s rebellious love interest. Carpenter eventually handcuffed him to a chair and taped his mouth shut in the music video.
It was all fun and games until their relationship ended in December, giving the lyrics a whole new meaning.
Now, in the new video with Dolly Parton, Carpenter seems to be picking up where she left off, according to E News.
The video sees Carpenter and Parton on the run, with a twist. In the back of their truck, they’re hiding someone.
MUSICAL NARRATIVES
Although the face isn’t visible, the person tied up in the truck bed sports the same outfit Keoghan wore in the original video when Carpenter taped him up.
Sabrina Carpenter is known for weaving narratives through her music videos, according to ELLE.
Espresso ends with her arrest, while Please Please Please starts with her release from jail. This latest video seems to continue that storyline, with a wink and a nudge to her former relationship.
DOLLY’S LOVE FOR SABRINA CARPENTER
Dolly Parton herself promoted the collaboration on Instagram.
“Turns out, two things can be short and sweet 😉 Listen to ‘Please Please Please (feat. Dolly Parton)’ everywhere now! ❤️ @sabrinacarpenter”.
Carpenter also shared her excitement, saying, “Love you forever @dollyparton 🤍🦋”.
Neither Sabrina Carpenter nor Keoghan have publicly addressed their breakup, but rumours circulated that Keoghan cheated, leading to severe backlash. The actor deactivated his Instagram account due to online harassment.
KEEP THE MUSIC COMING
So, is this Sabrina Carpenter’s way of having the last laugh? It certainly seems that way. With Dolly Parton by her side, she’s declaring their on-screen romance dead and buried.
Whether you’re jamming to Espresso or enjoying the country vibes of Please Please Please(ft. Dolly Parton),” Carpenter’s music continues to entertain.
