Wydad Casablanca and former Sundowns boss Rulani Mokwena was racially abused by opposition staff in a Botola Pro 1 League match on Saturday.
Rulani Mokwena racially abused by IR Tanger staff
The Wydad AC official X account pulled no punches about the incident, condemning racism in all its forms in football. Wydad registered a 2-2 draw with IR Tanger, keeping them fifth in the table with 15 points after 10 matches. They’re five points behind league leader RSB Berkane, who also has a game in hand on Rulani’s charges.
“I’m extremely upset. I was insulted by some opposing team members. I don’t think I deserve this, and I didn’t come to Morocco for this.”
Orlando Pirates star Sesane praises Rulani’s assistant
Pirates defender Thabiso Sesane has praised Rulani Mokwena‘s assistant Sinethemba Badela for shaping his career while it was still in the fledgling state. 24-year-old Sesane has been a mainstay for Pirates this season with several senior defenders out injured for various periods, namely Tapelo Xoki and Olisa Ndah. Sesane credits Rulani Mokwena’s Wydad assistant for his career progression.
“He has known me from the days the team was still based in Cape Town and from my days in kasi [township] football while I was at Pirates,” Sesane told iDiski Times.
“He wanted me to come play for Black Poison but when Pirates found out we were playing in the kasi tournament, they called a meeting and warned us not to play there. We were disciplined so that’s where my relationship with coach Themba started.

Former Sundowns boss still proving himself in Morocco
It hasn’t been an ideal start for 37-year-old Mokwena in the Botola Pro 1 league. The Joburg-born tactician presided over 91 matches at Sundowns between 2022 and 2024, and he was part of five trophy successes there.
