A devastating accident in Cosmo City, Johannesburg north, has left three people dead and two others injured after a driver, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, lost control of his vehicle.
The incident, which happened on Saturday around 06:30 am, shocked the local community.
The Driver Causing Chaos in Cosmo City
Eyewitnesses report that the driver was speeding when he veered off course and struck three pedestrians who were walking along the road. Two of the victims died instantly, while the third succumbed to injuries on his way to the hospital.
The driver, whose identity has not yet been released, did not stop after hitting the pedestrians. He continued driving and crashed into a nearby spaza shop, injuring two additional people inside.
Emergency Response and Community Grief
Local emergency services responded promptly, but despite their best efforts, the loss of life was significant. Community members called relatives of the victims to the scene to identify the bodies. Community members gathered at the scene, expressing their grief and frustration over what many see as a preventable tragedy.
“It’s heartbreaking to witness such loss because of reckless behavior,” said Nonhlanhla Mbele. “I think, in Cosmo City, we need stricter measures to stop drunk driving.”
Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. The driver is expected to face serious charges, including driving under the influence.
