A 28-year-old man has been arrested in Germiston, Gauteng, for allegedly threatening President Cyril Ramaphosa in a voice message. The Hawks’ Crime Against The State (CATS) unit, part of its Serious Organised Crime Investigation division, confirmed the arrest occurred on Friday, 23 May.

Threats Spark Swift Investigation

The case stems from an incident reported earlier this month. On Monday, 12 May, the CEO of a Cape Town-based company complained to the Hawks after receiving a voice note from the suspect in which threats were made against President Ramaphosa. In the message, the man allegedly made threats against the complainant, her family, and the Executive Mayor of Cape Town.

“The suspect is also alleged to have sent multiple threatening messages,” the Hawks said in a statement.

“Targeting the complainant, her family, and the Executive Mayor of Cape Town.”

Suspect Tracked and Arrested

The Cape Town branch of the Hawks’ CATS unit took charge of the investigation and tracked the suspect to Germiston following what authorities described as swift and coordinated work. He was arrested without incident and is currently being transported to Cape Town to face charges.

Authorities confirmed the suspect will appear in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 26 May. He is expected to be formally charged with intimidation.

National Security and Public Concern

The incident has raised concerns about public safety and the security of high-profile individuals in the country. While the motive details remain unclear, the Hawks have indicated that investigations are still underway to uncover the full scope of the threats.
