There has been a national outpouring of grief following the passing of human rights and religious leader Ashwin Trikamjee.

Trikamjee, the former president of the South African Hindu Maha Sabha and chairperson of the National Religious Leaders Forum, died on Thursday at the age of 80.

President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed his sorrow, saying: “I offer my condolences to the family, friends and associates of this outstanding icon of service to our nation.”

Trikamjee was well known in KwaZulu-Natal’s legal circles, having served as president of the Natal Law Society and the Association of Law Societies of South Africa.

He also chaired the African Regional Forum of the International Bar Association and was a member of the association’s Human Rights Committee.

A former Black Consciousness activist, he led the Durban Central division of the Natal Indian Congress and was a vice-president of the South African Football Association for many years.
