Limpopo is once again facing a troubling wave of school robberies. The police are searching for suspects who allegedly robbed a primary school in the province.
According to SABC News, the police said the suspects broke into Rhangani Primary School in Mhinga Village, near Malamulele, on 23 December. They stole computers, a TV set and other items valued at over R29 000.
BURGLARS BREAK INTO SCHOOL
IOL reported that Police Spokesperson Stephen Thakeng said the incident occurred between the early hours of 23 December and continued into 24 December. He mentioned that a 56-year-old man claimed everything was in place when he left the school premises.
“Doors, windows and burglar bars were properly locked on 23 December 2024, at about 10:30 a.m.,” he said.
When he returned to the school the following day, he discovered broken doors and stolen items.
ITEMS STOLEN
Thakeng stated that valuable items such as a white overhead projector, a Hisense television set, a black desktop computer and a black radio were stolen.
“The value of the items is R29 250. We are appealing to our residents to not hesitate to call the police about the school’s properties,” Thakeng added.
He also pleaded with anyone who has details to contact Detective Sergeant Gunguvha at 082 565 8510 or Crime Stop at 086 001 0111.
DA CALLS FOR MINISTER OF POLICE TO ADDRESS CRIME IN EDUCATIONAL FACILITIES
The Democratic Alliance (DA) mentioned on 28 November 2024 that it is concerned about the high crime rate in educational facilities. The latest crime statistics report for the second quarter of 2024/2025 shows a negative image of the safety and security of educational institutions.
The figures present shocking statistics on crime scenes, with 24 attempted murders, 13 murders, 106 rapes and 318 cases of assault. There was also a murder incident that involved learners killing each other, as well as other cases involving security guards killing learners.
After the first quarterly crime statistics were revealed, the DA submitted questions to the Minister of Police, Senzo Mchunu, regarding the safety of learners and the ministry’s collaboration with other departments to raise awareness and implement intervention strategies. They also inquired about plans for his department to address the failure of the ‘adopt-a-cop’ strategy due to a lack of resources. The DA is still awaiting a response from the minister.
The party also called on the Minister of Police to intervene by brainstorming ideas that will ensure the safety and support of learners, teachers and students in South African educational institutions.
In conclusion, the DA emphasised that educational institutions should be restored as places of hope and opportunity.
