JOHANNESBURG MAYOR DADA MORERO VISITS M1 BRIDGE IN BRAAMFONTEIN FOLLOWING FIRE

The Executive Mayor of Johannesburg, Dada Morero, visited the M1 Bridge near the Smit Street exit in Braamfontein to inspect the aftermath of an underground cable fire.

A fire broke out on Thursday, 1 May 2025, damaging critical 88 kV power cables between the Braamfontein and Fordsburg substations.

This fire caused multiple power outages in the area, including Parktown West, Newtown Junction, De Korte North, Smith West and surrounding areas.

According to City Power, the cause of the fire is allegedly linked to Zama Zamas’ activities.

“City Power has attributed the incident to the activities of zama zamas, whose illicit underground excavations and cable theft are believed to have sparked the fire,” said the power utility.

The power utility said power is being restored where possible and is awaiting authorisation to assess the damage and start with repairs.

What do you think might have been the cause of the fire?
