Parts of Tshwane to experience 7-hour darkness

The City of Tshwane’s Energy and Electricity Department has announced that there will be a planned shut down of power supply to the Soshanguve 132/11kV Substation. The shutdown will cause power disruption in certain areas in the city.

The city stated that the interruption is necessary to work on its control systems.

AREAS AFFECTED

The power outage will last for seven hours, from 9:00 to 16:00 on Wednesday, 29 January 2025 and will affect Blocks KK, V, T, R, S, SS, X, X buffer, P, W and Y.

“Customers are advised to treat all electricity supply points as live at all times,” the statement read.

The city has apologised for the inconvenience caused by the disruption.

GARSFONTEIN WATER OUTAGE

Parts of Garsfontein are experiencing a water outage due to a burst asbestos pipe. The areas affected by the water outage are Garsfontein Ext 3, 6, 8 and 10. A water tanker has been sent to the affected areas.

ESKOM REACHES 300 DAYS WITH NO LOAD SHEDDING

Eskom reported on Tuesday, 21 January 2025, that load shedding suspension has reached 300 days. This significant milestone was last reached in 2018.

“Credit goes to all our 40 000 dedicated and skilled Eskom employees who are committed to serving South Africa. Our sights are now firmly focused on delivering one year without load shedding at midnight on 26 March 2025,” said Bheki Nxumalo, Eskom Group Executive for Generation.

Nxumalo says that the 300 days without load shedding have been characterised by a reduction in unplanned outages. He says that a notable improvement in the energy availability factor of approximately 7% and savings in diesel expenditure of R16.42 billion.

“The savings we are making in diesel spend are invested in the business to drive efficiencies further and place Eskom on a path to profitability and long-term operational and financial sustainability,” said Dan Marokane, Group Chief Executive of Eskom.

CABLE THEFT RESULTS IN DARKNESS IN SOME PARTS OF TSHWANE

In other news, Jacaranda FM reported that several areas in the east of Tshwane were left without electricity on Wednesday, 15 January 2025, after a cable theft in a tunnel under the N1 highway.

Tshwane Mayor, Nasiphi Moya, made a visit to the site following a cable theft and vandalism incident that occurred on Sunday, 12 January 2025.

“While on site, I was briefed by the City’s emergency teams and regional operation officials about the interventions being made to speedily replace the cables and restore power,” Moya said.
