The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed the arrest of 222 individuals linked to rape cases between 31 March and 6 April. These arrests form part of a nationwide effort that led to 13 939 suspects being taken into custody for various crimes.
According to SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, the suspects arrested for rape range in age from 24 to 79 years. Also among them is a 58-year-old teacher in Limpopo accused of raping a 13-year-old female learner and a 79-year-old man in Mpumalanga suspected of raping a 14-year-old girl.
“A number of takedowns and arrests were effected, which include the arrest of those who are alleged to have raped and violated minors,” said Mathe.
Public outrage has surged in recent weeks, primarily driven by protests over the rape of 7-year-oldCwecwe at a school in Matatiele, Eastern Cape. Furthermore, the incident reignited national anger over the state’s handling of sexual violence and triggered calls for more decisive policing and justice.
Additionally, Mathe said the police have responded to these demands by increasing visibility and tracing operations across all provinces. Efforts include stop-and-search patrols and the pursuit of wanted suspects, particularly those involved in gender-based violence and femicide.
“Through high visibility patrols, stop and searches and the tracing of wanted suspects, police are hard at work in stamping the authority of the state,” she added.

In addition, SAPS maintains that the fight against gender-based violence remains a top priority. Their strategy combines investigative work with proactive community policing to deter repeat offences and ensure perpetrators are swiftly brought to justice.
