A close confident to Oscar Pistorius claims that he is “taking responsibility” for the death of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.
Twelve years ago, the former athlete shot and killed the blonde model after claiming to mistaking her for a home intruder. The tragic incident took place on Valentine’s Day.
Oscar was released on parole in January 2024 after serving half of his 13-year and five-month murder sentence.
OSCAR PISTORIUS: ‘HE WILL LIVE WITH WHAT HAPPENED’
Over the weekend, Daily Mail writer Mark Williams-Thomas claimed that he believed that Oscar Pistorius still felt guilty over Reeva Steenkamp’s death.
The former detective turned investigative interviewed the convicted murderer in a tell-all interview in 2016.
On the anniversary of Reeva’s death, Mark wroteof Oscar: “He will forever live with what happened to him, and he’s never shied away from that.
“He’s always accepted the responsibility for what he did. He took someone’s life, and he’ll live with that for the whole of his life.”
Over the years, Mark has repeatedly defended Oscar from criticism from the public. After backlash over his views, Mark tweeted months before Oscar’s parole release: “My views are informed (more than anyone else on social media) because I have been able to study and have access to every piece of evidence, from both sides, spent time to understand the gun culture and violence in SA.
“[I have] also spoken to all concerned parties involved. I don’t for one minute condone or look to minimise or excuse Oscar’s killing of Reeva. But to give an objective, informed view. Sentences and paroles are given for a reason.
“And those attacking me for having misogynistic views or supporting a killer must also feel the same for every parole board member around the world or judge who gives a sentence that supports or allows the release of someone convicted of murder”.
REMORSEFUL OR NOT?
In 2023, Reeva Steenkamp’s mother, June, claimed that Oscar Pistorius had “shown no remorse” following her daughter’s murder a decade earlier.
She also claims that the former athlete “refused” to see her when she attempted to confront him over what transpired over a decade ago.
Speaking on Australia’s Insights reality series Seeking Justice about his parole release, June said, “I feel that he is not rehabilitated. His problem is his temper. He might hurt someone else if he comes out.”
June added that Oscar Pistorius had “shown her no remorse” either. On the day of Oscar’s parole hearing [then in March 2023, which was denied], Reeva’s mom claims he “refused” to see her.”
She continued: “He would not come out of his cell. He was supposed to come to talk to me, but he refused”.
When asked what justice would mean to Reeva’s parents, June replied: “A confession.”
She said: “It would help us. That would be justice”.
