Orlando Pirates have named former Mamelodi Sundowns boss Pitso Mosimane their priority replacement.
After three seasons and five trophies, Jose Riveiro has ended his illustrious Buccaneers career. The Spanish tactician inherited an offbeat Pirates team and restored it to winning ways.
Morocco’s Wydad Athletic has expressed interest in Riveiro, but it’s up for debate whether he remains in Africa amid homesickness claims.
Meanwhile, Orlando Pirates are ramping up their selection process, and according to reports, they want Mosimane.
“There are a few coaches to be considered for different reasons, but apparently it’s believed that Pitso [Mosimane] is their preferred candidate,” a source revealed.
“It’s believed that he is their first priority at the moment. That’s what the team wants as things stand. Even if they have not spoken to him (behind the scenes) yet, he is their first priority.
“They are saying if they (Pirates) managed to work with Jose Riveiro for three years, then why can’t they go for a coach like Pitso? So, they know what they are looking for, and they know quality doesn’t come cheap,” the source added.
“But as you know, although he is their first priority, he is not the only one they are looking at. As I said, there are different factors they are looking at.”
What about Paz?
Another candidate for the Orlando Pirates role is current strength and conditioning coach Carlos Nodar Paz.
“He (Paz) is very capable as a coach, that’s what I can tell you, and that’s why the coach went to fetch him from where he was,” a source said.
“He is part of the coach’s (Riveiro’s) success this season, and his work is recognised and appreciated,” the source added.
