Pirates have made the decisive call to extend Thabiso Monyane’s contract, according to a source close to both the player and the club. Reports have indicated that Pirates had already been negotiating a contract extension for Monyane, whose current deal was set to expire in June 2025. Due to complications in securing other right back targets, the club is now more focused on retaining the player who has been part of the club’s youth development system.
A source revealed, “It’s true the talks have been going on for some time now, and the delay occurred when it was believed the club wanted to use him in an exchange deal with other players, like Fawaaz Basadien from Stellenbosch FC. However, since those deals didn’t materialize, Pirates are now keen on keeping Thabiso.”
Monyane: Key player in Pirates’ right back options
The source added that Monyane’s new deal will include a two-year agreement, with an additional one-year option. Once signed, the contract could extend his tenure at the club until June 2028, solidifying his position as a crucial member of the Pirates defense.
Another critical factor in the decision to keep Monyane is the uncertainty around other right back transfers. “With the Thabang Matuludi move unlikely, the club cannot afford to lose another right back without a solid backup plan in place,” the source noted.

The source emphasized, “The club can’t afford to lose any of these players and only remain with two.
