Amid Oswin Appollis and Fawaaz Basadien negotiations, Orlando Pirates, sitting second in the league, failed to make any signings in the January transfer market.
Perhaps they were too optimistic in thinking they could land the Bafana stars, but with all respect to Polokwane City and Stellenbosch FC, one can’t blame Buccaneers management for thinking they’d get a deal over the line.
The Sea Robbers were adamant about signing Basadien but could not do so after months of exchanges – Orlando Pirates, unwilling to wait any longer, are now looking at the 28-year-old’s backup, Omega Mdaka.
Pirates eyeing Mdaka
Orlando Pirates are reportedly monitoring former Kaizer Chiefs academy player Mdaka, who joined Steve Barker’s side last offseason:
“You see that young defender? The left back who came from Chiefs? Yes, Mdaka, Orlando Pirates are monitoring him. They are finding it difficult to get Fawaaz [Basadien] so they think Omega [Mdaka] would be a good option,” SoccerLadumareported.
“He is still young, and he has great potential. They are monitoring him first before they could make any move.”
Another source close to Orlando Pirates, said, “this could work properly for the club because at the moment their main focus in defence is left back,
“They only have Innocent Maela who is not playing that much and then Paseka Mako who just returned from injury and that’s why Deon Hotto has mainly been playing in that position,
“So, now they are looking at another left back and Mdaka has emerged as one of the top targets according to their scouts and recruiters. So, let’s wait and see.”
Who else should Orlando Pirates sign?
