Orlando Pirates set to sign a future star in a bold move to stay ahead of the curve, according to Soccer Laduma.

The Bucs have secured one of their brightest youth prospects, Yanga Madiba, with a long-term contract starting in July. A source revealed that the 23-year-old left-back has signed a three-year deal, keeping him in Soweto until June 2028.

“They have already made that decision… It’s as good as done,” a source confirmed. “He is still young and they want him to grow and gain experience while learning from the older players.”

Next in line after Maela?

Insiders say Pirates are grooming Madiba to eventually take over from current club captain Innocent Maela, who is reportedly nearing the end of his career.

“Yes, there are other left backs the club is looking at to sign,” the source added, “but they need to have their own development players in the squad as well.”

Madiba was spotted training with the senior team during the club’s pre-season camp in Spain and has been quietly impressing the coaching staff since.

Loan spell built his confidence

Madiba previously enjoyed a solid loan spell at Orbit College in the Motsepe Foundation Championship. Where he gained valuable game time before returning to Pirates.

He recently made the matchday squad for the Buccaneers’ 1-0 Nedbank Cup semi-final win over Marumo Gallants at Orlando Stadium.

More youth, less risk for Pirates

This move is part of Pirates’ larger plan to bring more youth products into the first team. By striking a balance between rising talent and veteran experience.

As previously reported by The South African, left-back Paseka Mako is also expected to stay on, with Maela likely to step aside in the near future.
