Orlando Pirates set sights on Stellenbosch youngster as a reinforcement.
Pirates are actively searching for a left-back, and while their initial target was Stellenbosch FC’s Fawaaz Basadien, negotiations have proven to be a challenge. As a result, the Soweto giants have now turned their attention to another promising talent from the same club, Unathi Omega Mdaka.
Who is Unathi Omega Mdaka?
Mdaka, a former Kaizer Chiefs prospect, has been making a name for himself at Stellenbosch FC. The 21-year-old defender has featured in several matches across different competitions this season, proving his worth as a reliable deputy for Basadien.
His journey has been anything but smooth. Last year, he, along with Puso Dithejane and Donay Jansen, faced suspension from Chiefs for refusing ball boy duties. While Jansen later apologized and rejoined the team, Mdaka moved to Stellenbosch, and Dithejane signed with TS Galaxy. Jansen now plays on loan for SuperSport United.
Pirates scouting Mdaka for a future move
Sources inside Orlando Pirates have confirmed that the club is closely monitoring Mdaka as a potential left-back signing for the upcoming season.
“You see that young defender? The left back who came from Kaizer Chiefs? Yes, Mdaka. Orlando Pirates are monitoring him. They have been presented with the opportunity to sign Fawaaz (Basadien), but they know it will be difficult. So, they think Unathi (Mdaka) would be a good option. He is still young and has great potential. They are monitoring him first before making any move,” an insider revealed.
Left-back reinforcement a priority
With the left-back position identified as a key area of concern, Pirates are determined to strengthen their defense.
“This could work properly for the club because at the moment, their main focus in defense is left-back. They only have Innocent Maela, who is not playing that much, and Paseka Mako, who just returned from injury. That’s why Deon Hotto has mainly been playing in that position. Now, they are looking for another left-back, and Mdaka has emerged as one of the top targets according to their scouts and recruiters. So, let’s wait and see,” the source added.
With Stellenbosch’s left-back Basadien proving to be a tough target, Mdaka’s emergence as an option makes sense for Pirates. As the transfer window approaches, all eyes will be on whether the Buccaneers will make a formal move for the talented 21-year-old.
