Orlando Pirates are set to announce a new coach at the end of the season with Jose Riveiro’s departure confirmed.
Pirates finally put an end to the uncertainty of Riveiro’s future by confirming he won’t sign a new deal.
Pirates searching for Riveiro successor
Riveiro would have completed three seasons as a Pirates coach at the end of the season. During his tenure so far, Riveiro has helped Pirates win five trophies. Three MTN8 titles in a row as well as back to back Nedbank Cup titles. Furthermore, his side is still in it with a chance of making it three Nedbank Cup titles in a row as well, this season. Beyond that, he is currently leading the Buccaneers into second place in the Betway Premiershipas it stands. Beyond local boarders, he ensured qualification for the side, into the group stages of the CAF Champions League. After doing so for the first time since 2018, they finished top of their group and unbeaten.
Now with Riveiro set to depart, speculation is rife as to who will be his successor at Pirates. Now according to Soccer-Ladumathe decorated Pitso Mosimane is top of their list!
Mosimane the top candidate?
“There are a few coaches to be considered for different reasons but apparently it’s believed that Pitso (Mosimane) is their (Pirates) preferred candidate. It’s believed that he is their first priority at the moment. That’s what the team wants as things stand. Even if they have not spoken to him (behind the scenes) yet, he is their first priority,” said the source to the same publication.
The source goes on to add that Pirates see a pursuit of Mosimane as a sign of their ambition.
“They are saying if they (Pirates) managed to work with Jose Riveiro for three years then why can’t they go for a coach like Pitso or even (someone else) higher (paid)? So, they know what they are looking for and they know quality doesn’t come cheap. But as you know, although he is their first priority he is not the only one they are looking at. As I said, there are different factors they are looking at,” concluded the source.
