SuperSport Unitedhead coach Gavin Hunt has revealed that Orlando Pirates offered him a job about 20 years ago.

The 60-year-old enjoyed success with Moroka Swallows, Matsatsantsa, Seven Stars and Bidvest Wits. At SuperSport, Hunt won three Betway Premiership titles in a row which ultimately made him one of the most successful coaches in the Premier Soccer League (PSL).

He tasted his last league success with Bidvest Wits in 2017. Speaking to Peter du Toit on SoccerBeat, Gavin Hunt revealed that Orlando Pirates offered him a coaching job two decades ago.

I was standing on the training grounds at Swallows and the chairman phoned me. I am talking 2004/05. I wouldn’t say I wasn’t ready for the job, I just felt, I was at Swallows, we were doing well, we were in the top four. I was just like why move now, you know,” he said.

Gavin Hunt turned down Orlando Pirates

The Buccaneers won the 2002/03 but struggled to compete the next season before hiring Kosta Papić in 2004. Hunt implied that Pirates may have tried to bring him in around that time.

The Cape Town born coach is currently in his second stint with SuperSport but has since struggled to make the club competitive. Before moving back to Matsatsantsa, Gavin Hunt coached Orlando Pirates archrivals Kaizer Chiefs, for just one season.

Despite failing to improve the club, the former Hellenic coach helped the club reach the CAF Champions League semi-finals for the first time. He was fired just before the end of the season and Amakhosi ultimately lost the final.

Do you think Hunt would have been a success at Pirates?
